The ADAT (Advanced Dental Admission Test) is an examination administered by the American Dental Association (ADA). It’s designed for individuals interested in pursuing advanced education programs in dentistry, such as advanced standing programs, advanced dental education programs, and residency programs in Canada and the United States.

The Canadian dental schools which require ADAT score for international dentist/advanced standing programs are:

  • University of Toronto
  • McGill University
  • University of Alberta
  • University of Manitoba
  • University of Saskatchewan
  • Western University (From 2025 session)

For Canadian dental schools an ADAT exam score of 600 is considered a good score.

The ADAT (Advanced Dental Admission Test) assesses candidates’ knowledge in various areas relevant to dentistry. The subjects tested in the ADAT exam typically include:

Biomedical Sciences: This may cover topics such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, and pathology, focusing on their relevance to dental practice.

Clinical Sciences: This section evaluates understanding in clinical disciplines such as restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and oral medicine.

Data, research interpretations and Evidence based dentistry: This section tests candidate’s knowledge of Biostatistics , Epidemiology and Evidence based dentistry.

The scoring of the ADAT (Advanced Dental Admission Test) is based on a scaled score system. The individual score for three exam sections viz. Biomedical Science, Clinical Science and Data Science are calculated separately. The final ADAT score is the mean of the three section scores, however may not be exact mean of the section scores. Here’s how it generally works:

Raw Score: Your raw score is the number of questions you answer correctly on the exam. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it’s beneficial to answer every question, even if you’re unsure.

Conversion to Scaled Score: The raw score is converted to a scaled score using a statistical formula. This formula adjusts for variations in difficulty between different versions of the exam, ensuring fairness across test administrations.

Scaled Score Range: The scaled score typically ranges from 200 to 800. A higher scaled score indicates a higher level of performance on the exam.

Percentile Rank: In addition to the scaled score, you will also receive a percentile rank, which indicates your performance relative to other test-takers. For example, if your percentile rank is 70, it means you performed better than 70% of the test-takers.

The exact scoring methodology, including the specific formula used to convert raw scores to scaled scores, may vary slightly depending on the administration of the exam. However, the overall goal is to provide a fair and reliable assessment of candidates’ readiness for advanced education in dentistry.
